K.Porten和D.V.Volman在1962年介紹了將CO,CO2,H2等催化還原生成甲烷后用氫火焰離子化檢測器進行檢測。Johns和Thomson進一步證實了這一方法, 并測定了每種氣體的操作參數,目前氣體中微量碳的分析方法有多種途徑,但其中為簡單快捷的是氣相色譜中甲烷轉化爐法。樣品通過色譜柱實現組分的分離,在甲烷轉化爐中由Ni(鎳)觸媒將分離的一氧化碳和二氧化碳加氫轉化為甲烷,而后再通過氫焰檢測器檢出。
